Microsampler 85': Free Casio SK-1 Virtual Instrument by Brownie Digital
Brownie Digital has released Microsampler 85', a faithful free Casio SK-1 virtual instrument that recreates the sound and workflow of the iconic 1985 keyboard sampler. The plugin captures the nostalgic character, digital grit, and quirky limitations of the original 8-bit hardware inside modern digital audio workstations. Producers can download the free standard edition directly via Gumroad with a pay-what-you-want checkout.
Authentic 1980s Hardware Emulation
The original Casio SK-1 earned cult status across hip-hop, synth-pop, and indie music due to its unique crunch, built-in tones, and punchy rhythm patterns. Microsampler 85' mirrors the hardware layout and architecture, retaining the signature 1.47-second mono sampling window alongside built-in circuit-bending capabilities.
Key features in the free edition include:
- Authentic 1.47-second 8-bit mono sampling engine
- Factory preset tones and all 11 original accompaniment rhythms
- Built-in step editor for sequenced pattern playback
- Circuit-bent parameters for aggressive lo-fi noise and pitch warping
Expansive Upgrade Option
For musicians wanting deeper sound design capabilities, Brownie Digital also offers an Expansive Upgrade for $10 USD. This paid tier expands the sampling limit to 30 seconds in stereo, unlocks dual LFO modulation, adds a customizable ADSR envelope generator, and provides modern rhythm banks along with a dedicated live input audio effect plugin. The free base edition remains fully usable on its own with no sound drops or demo limits.
Microsampler 85' is available as a free standalone download or plugin for modern production setups. You can claim the instrument at no cost directly on the official Brownie Digital Gumroad store.
